History of Tissot Watches: A Story of Evolution
Share
Founded in 1853, Tissot was built on a bold idea: to unite time-honoured Swiss watchmaking traditions with an unrelenting spirit of innovation. For more than 170 years, the Maison has crafted timepieces that measure more than time; they define it.
Rooted in precision, craftsmanship, and forward-thinking design, Tissot has accompanied generations through every milestone and moment. In celebrating this legacy, we explore the Maison’s rich history, its enduring passion for time, and the flagship collections that continue to shape its story today.
Early Beginnings
While Tissot is now recognised worldwide for its innovation and influence, the Maison began with remarkably humble origins. In 1853, Charles-Félicien Tissot and his son, Charles-Émile, transformed their family home in Le Locle into a small workshop dedicated to crafting finely crafted pocket watches.
As demand grew, their timepieces earned a reputation for exceptional precision and craftsmanship. Recognising both the importance of technical mastery and the strength of the local watchmaking community, Charles-Émile took decisive action to safeguard the future of the craft. He established watchmaking schools in the region, ensuring that expertise would be passed down through generations. His commitment was later acknowledged by the Swiss authorities, who appointed him National Inspector in recognition of his contributions to the industry.
With continued growth and the development of some of the earliest wristwatches, the Maison’s reach soon extended far beyond Switzerland. From Chicago to Antwerp, Tissot’s pocket watches were celebrated for their reliability and refinement. What began as a modest home workshop evolved into a pioneering force in Swiss watchmaking.
Moving into the 20th Century
Soon, the modest workshop evolved into a thriving factory, as Tissot began producing its movements in-house, a decisive step toward greater technical independence. In 1925, the Maison introduced the world’s first anti-magnetic wristwatch, addressing the growing challenge magnetic fields posed to timekeeping precision in an increasingly industrialised era.
Yet Tissot’s vision extended beyond technical mastery. The brand also demonstrated strategic foresight through bold political and economic initiatives. In 1930, it joined forces with OMEGA to form the SSIH (Société Suisse pour l’Industrie Horlogère). This landmark merger enabled both houses to share resources, pool technological expertise, and reinforce their global standing, laying the groundwork for further innovation.
In the postwar years of the 1950s, Tissot embraced the rise of automatic Swiss timepieces, reflecting the evolving expectations of a modern clientele. The momentum continued into the 1960s, when the brand deepened its commitment to sports chronographs, timepieces that captured the spirit of precision, performance, and competition.
Keeping with the Times
Like many Swiss watchmakers, Tissot confronted the Quartz Crisis of the 1970s with resilience and adaptability. Rather than resisting change, the Maison embraced emerging quartz technology, introducing precise, reliable timepieces that met the demands of a rapidly evolving global market while safeguarding its commitment to Swiss quality and innovation.
A defining moment followed in 1983, when Tissot became part of the Swatch Group, the world’s largest watch manufacturer. This strategic integration provided access to cutting-edge research, industrial expertise, and global distribution networks, all while preserving the Maison’s independent spirit and pioneering ethos.
That forward-thinking mindset was powerfully illustrated in 1999, at the dawn of a new millennium, with the launch of the T-Touch. Seamlessly blending traditional Swiss craftsmanship with touch-sensitive technology, the T-Touch introduced multifunction capabilities such as a compass, altimeter, and thermometer, redefining what a modern wristwatch could be.
