Dive Deeper: The New OMEGA Planet Ocean

It is rare to witness a truly comprehensive redesign of a modern icon, yet at the close of 2025, OMEGA achieved exactly that with the unveiling of the fourth-generation Seamaster Planet Ocean.

Celebrating the collection’s 20th anniversary, the brand revealed a ground-up reimagining of its flagship dive watch. While subtle design cues from the original 2000 Planet Ocean remain, this latest generation introduces a host of purposeful updates, decisively redefining the line for a new era.

This new chapter begins with the launch of seven Co-Axial Master Chronometer models, including editions rendered in OMEGA’s signature orange, a colour synonymous with the Maison’s deep-sea heritage.

The OMEGA Seamaster Planet Ocean debuted in 2005 as a more robust counterpart to the Seamaster 300M, engineered with significantly increased water resistance of up to 600 metres. Born from OMEGA’s enduring spirit of exploration and infused with the Maison’s diving DNA, the Planet Ocean was purpose-built for discovery.

The model swiftly captured global attention following its on-screen appearance in Casino Royale, where Daniel Craig made his debut as James Bond wearing the Planet Ocean. This high-profile moment helped propel the watch to icon status, particularly at a time when purpose-built deep-sea dive watches were still an emerging concept.

The collection saw its first major update in 2011, followed by a further refresh in 2016, with both generations focusing largely on subtle design refinements to modernise the aesthetic. A notable milestone came in 2014, when OMEGA introduced its first Planet Ocean featuring an orange ceramic bezel, an innovation not previously seen within the line.

As we will explore, however, the fourth generation of the Planet Ocean represents a far more profound evolution, introducing a comprehensive range of meaningful changes across the entire collection.

Keen followers of OMEGA will immediately recognise the evolution of the Planet Ocean, with the most dramatic transformation found in the case design. Where previous generations favoured softer, flowing contours, the new Planet Ocean adopts a markedly more angular aesthetic.

Subtle references to the legendary Ploprof are evident. Yet, the bold geometry and crisp lines lend the watch a distinctive identity that clearly sets it apart from the wider Seamaster family.

The case itself has also been significantly reduced in size, now measuring 42mm in diameter and just 13.79mm in thickness, a substantial decrease from the previous 16.1mm profile. This slimmer silhouette is made possible by technical advancements within the movement, as well as the adoption of a flat sapphire crystal.

The bezel has been comprehensively reworked as well. The ceramic unidirectional bezel now sits flatter against the case and features deeper, more pronounced grooves, enhancing grip while sharpening the watch’s overall visual presence.

At first glance, the dial appears familiar. Closer inspection, however, reveals a series of thoughtful refinements: subtly revised hour and minute hands, evolved hour markers to complement the case, and most notably, the removal of the date window. The rationale is clear: less is more. With that in mind, let us take a closer look.

Principally, fans of the OMEGA Planet Ocean will instantly recognise the absence of a helium escape valve, an asset that has defined these timepieces for the last 20 years. This provides the timepiece with a sleeker finish, whilst retaining its water resistance. This is thanks to the inclusion of an inner titaninum ring, an advancement made with the Ultra Deep. This provides the case with the strength required to seal the watch for deep diving.

Each Planet Ocean timepiece is powered by the Master Chronometer calibre 8912, which has been previously used in the Ultra Deep models. The self-winding movement offers 60 hours of power reserve and meets OMEGA’s high standards of precision, performance, and magnetic-resistance, all approved by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS). 

With this launch, OMEGA have unveiled three different colourwaves, creating a collection of seven variants in total. With the iconic orange, blue, and black models, with rubber or steel bracelets, each provides a refined and modern aesthetic.
