Designed for the Depths: The TUDOR Pelagos

The TUDOR Pelagos collection, launched in 2012 alongside its equally successful sibling, the Black Bay, is TUDOR’s answer to the need for a truly uncompromising, technically modern dive watch. A triumphant marriage of the Swiss Maison’s extensive dive-watch expertise and its well-established naval partnerships, the Pelagos interprets this rich legacy of precision and performance into a rugged underwater timepiece built to handle all extremes. 

From military predecessors worn by casual divers and naval recruits alike to its Baselworld launch and subsequent popularity, the TUDOR Pelagos is a watch designed for the most daring of wrists, built to be pushed to its very limits. When designing and building this thoroughly modern diving instrument, however, the TUDOR watchmakers were not drawing from oceanic inspiration alone; with an archive that spanned more than a century of references, most of which were practically oriented tool watches such as the shock-resistant Oyster Prince Submariner, TUDOR was already well acquainted with the fine art of functional horology. 

Its design set the template for all that would follow amongst TUDOR’s subsequent forays into underwater horology: a rotating bezel, designed for frictionless use beneath the surface; luminous markers that prioritised legibility above all; and a sealed case engineered to keep water out whilst protecting the delicate inner workings of the watch. 

This was created, in part, in response to the Maison’s new relationship with the French Marine Nationale. The models quickly demonstrated the brand’s exceptional craftsmanship, ultimately leading to its appointment as the official supplier to the French National Navy in 1961.

As the waves continued to crash and shape the shorelines, time moved steadily on, bringing us to 2012 - the year TUDOR unveiled the modern Pelagos. Introduced at Baselworld alongside the Heritage Black Bay, the ref. 25500TN made an immediate impression. Crafted from Grade 2 titanium, its 42mm case measured 14mm thick and offered an impressive 500m of water resistance. This first modern iteration marked the moment the Pelagos was introduced to a new generation.

Ever since, the Pelagos has remained one of the core collections of TUDOR. A purpose-built dive watch defined by its uncompromising functionality and enduring design, forged by years of consideration. Across its many iterations and variants, it is a watch collection we deeply admire, as captivating as the ocean depths it was made to explore. 

Paying homage to TUDOR’s rich diving heritage while continually pushing the boundaries of modern watchmaking, the Pelagos remains a collection built to withstand the elements and inspire the next generation of adventurers. With a brief history in mind, we now move towards the growth of the collection with significant milestones.

Following the launch of the Pelagos, TUDOR introduced the Pelagos LHD, a model designed specifically for left-handed divers. Yet, this was far more than a stylistic choice or simply a matter of placing the crown on the opposite side of the case; it was a design born of genuine purpose.

The story can be traced back to their relationship with the French Navy, which requested watches tailored to the needs of its left-handed divers. In response, TUDOR developed the ref. 9401, adapting its dive watch to meet the practical demands of the naval service. Decades later, the Pelagos LHD launched in 2016, reviving this distinctive configuration.

Boasting a 500m water resistance and crafted from titanium, the Pelagos LHD bears all the hallmarks of TUDOR’s original design. One of the unique features of this timepiece is its date window, with even-numbered days displayed in red and odd numbers in black. This provides an almost vintage look to the timepiece.

In 2021, TUDOR revisited the Pelagos with the launch of the Pelagos FXD, a model that served as a constant reminder of the Maison’s longstanding partnership with the French Navy. Combining purpose-built engineering with exceptional performance, the FXD (Fixed Strap Bar integration FiXeD) was developed with a very specific mission in mind.

Its design was shaped in collaboration with the Marine Nationale’s Commando Hubert unit, whose divers required a watch capable of supporting a particular underwater navigation technique. The manoeuvre involved swimming for a set period in a predetermined direction before adjusting both time and heading to navigate the next section of the area. To accommodate this method, the Pelagos FXD features a bidirectional countdown bezel, allowing divers to set the remaining time, rather than track elapsed time.

The original 2021 version features a blue dial paired with a matching fabric strap, while the 2023 model introduced a block dial with a distinctive green-and-red fabric strap, paying tribute to US Navy divers. Yet, beneath these distinctive design details lies the same approach to performance. Powered by TUDOR’s Manufacture Calibre MT5602 and housed in a 42mm titanium case, the Pelagos FXD offers 200m of water resistance. More than simply a highly capable dive watch, it is a timepiece shaped by military requirements and naval heritage.

Nevertheless, the Pelagos FXD has continued to evolve as TUDOR pushes the boundaries of what its tool watches can achieve. In the sub-collection’s latest iteration, TUDOR has shifted its focus beyond professional divers to creating timepieces designed around the demands of elite teams. This evolution is exemplified by the Pelagos FXD Chrono ‘Cycling Edition’.

What sets this timepiece apart is its purpose-built function, like the original Pelagos FXD. While it retains the signature fixed-bar strap system, the Pelagos FXD Chrono has been developed specifically for the riders of the TUDOR Pro Cycling Team. With riders pushing their bodies and minds to their limits with every pedal stroke, the watch has been engineered with the demands of professional cycling firmly in mind. Its carbon fibre and titanium construction keeps it remarkably lightweight, while the integrated chronograph provides riders with a precise means of tracking elapsed time.

The Pelagos FXD Chrono ‘Cycling Edition’ therefore demonstrates just how far TUDOR can evolve their original concepts. What began as a watch engineered for the demands of professional diving has expanded into a platform capable of serving elite athletes across entirely different disciplines and demands. And if TUDOR is willing to continue adapting the Pelagos to meet the needs of professional teams, one question follows: what comes next?

Diving watches tend to be larger than other styles of timepieces, designed for maximum legibility in the darkest depths. Yet, TUDOR has proven that readability is not simply a matter of size; it is built into every element of the watch’s construction.

This philosophy led to the development of the Pelagos in 2022, introducing a more compact 39mm case. Crafted from Grade 2 titanium and measuring just 11.8mm thick, the TUDOR Pelagos 39 is powered by the COSC-certified Manufacture Calibre MT5400, and retains the essential characteristics of the Pelagos family. It is also fitted with TUDOR’s ‘T-Fit’ clasp, utilised in a variety of models, allowing for rapid and precise adjustment of the strap’s length without the need for tools.

In terms of both design and legibility, the Pelagos 39 proves that great things can come in small packages. Its iconic TUDOR ‘snowflake’ hands, combined with generously luminescent hands and hour markers, ensure exceptional readability, even in low-light conditions. Rather than relying on size, the Pelagos 39 demonstrates how thoughtful design and construction can deliver clarity exactly where it matters most. Therefore, if you are seeking a purpose-built dive watch but prefer a smaller profile, then the TUDOR Pelagos 39 may be the timepiece for you.

Finally, we arrive at an incredible milestone: the Pelagos Ultra. Unveiled at Watches & Wonders 2025, the Pelagos Ultra represents TUDOR’s most capable dive watch to date. Engineered to push the very boundaries of deep-sea exploration, it offers an impressive 1,000m water resistance and is designed for those who demand serious performance from their timepiece. Achieving this level of capability, however, was no simple feat.

Taking the Pelagos collection to new depths, the watch combines Grade 2 titanium with a Grade 5 titanium caseback, in a 43mm case measuring 14.5mm thick. A watch designed to withstand such extreme depths requires equally advanced technology within. Among its key innovations is a compact helium escape valve, allowing helium to efficiently escape during saturation diving and helping to protect the integrity of the case. Discreetly integrated into the side of the case, it is an underrated feature that can easily go unnoticed.

Completing the package, the Pelagos Ultra is both COSC-certified and Master Chronometer certified, with a 65-hour power reserve. Together, these features make it a compelling demonstration of how TUDOR has evolved its original concept into a modern diving timepiece, combining extreme water resistance and precision into a timepiece that performs where few watches can.
