Each of the four Breitling Avenger Automatic 42 references presented by Michael Spiers share the same technical foundations, differing only in the colour of the dial and the choice of strap. The case is rendered in matte-brushed stainless steel, measuring 42mm in diameter with a thickness of 12.15mm and a lug-to-lug width of approximately 51.2mm, proportions that grant the watch serious wrist presence without straying into the territory of its larger stablemates.

As with every mechanical movement in the Breitling catalogue, it carries chronometer certification from COSC, the official Swiss body which tests movements over fifteen days in five positions and at three temperatures to guarantee an average daily rate within −4/+6 seconds.

Breitling Avenger Automatic 42 Blue Dial 

The blue-dialled Breitling Avenger Automatic 42 occupies a happy medium between the more assertive green and the archetypal black, offering a saturated navy that reads almost as dark charcoal in low lighting, only to reveal its true richness beneath the sun. It is a colour with a wonderful sense of versatility, providing sufficient visual interest to distinguish the watch from the more familiar black-dialled tool watches whilst remaining entirely appropriate in formal company.

The first is a central, red-tipped GMT hand that completes a single revolution of the dial every 24 hours rather than 12, indicating a second time zone against the 24-hour scale. The second is the bezel, a rotating pinion bezel bearing a 24-timezone indication that can be turned to bring a third time zone into play. 

For anyone who regularly maintains a mental note of home, local, and destination time, the practical value of this arrangement is considerable, and it is deployed here with characteristic Breitling Avenger legibility: the red tip of the GMT hand is instantly identifiable against the black dial, requiring no interpretation whatsoever.

Powering these Breitling Avenger watches is the Breitling Calibre 32, a self-winding mechanical movement with a second time zone function, running at 28,800 vibrations per hour with 25 jewels and a slightly more generous power reserve of approximately 42 hours. Like the Calibre 17, it is a certified chronometer, tested and approved by the COSC. The 44mm stainless steel case retains the family's screw-locked crown with twin gaskets, screwed-in caseback, cambered and doubly glareproofed sapphire crystal, and the same 300m (990ft) of water resistance, ensuring that the added complication costs nothing in robustness.

Breitling Avenger GMT 44 with Leather Strap 

Presented on a black military-grade leather strap fastened with a titanium folding pin-buckle, this reference offers the most tempered interpretation of the Breitling Avenger GMT. The choice of titanium for the buckle is a considered one; appreciably lighter than steel and highly corrosion-resistant, it helps to offset the substance of the 44mm case and keeps the overall weight on the wrist pleasingly modest.

The black dial provides the ideal canvas for the GMT complication to take centre stage, its luminous baton markers and silver-toned hands rendered in stark contrast whilst the red-tipped 24-hour hand sweeps clearly above them. The date sits at 3 o'clock, and the rotating pinion bezel above remains readily grippable, its 24-timezone scale legible at a glance.

Breitling Avenger GMT 44 on Bracelet 

The same watch presented on Breitling's three-row stainless steel bracelet is, by contrast, the more assertive proposition. Secured with a micro-adjustable folding clasp, the bracelet lends the 44mm case its full measure of presence and creates an unbroken sweep of brushed steel from lug to lug – the configuration that most closely resembles the purposeful, instrument-like Avengers of the collection's earliest years.
