The History of TUDOR Watches

Posted on 16 June 2025

The story of TUDOR watches begins in 1926, when the brand name was first registered by Swiss watchmaking house Veuve de Philippe Hüther. The intention was clear from the outset: to create timepieces that combined technical excellence with refined design, made to withstand the demands of modern life.

Founder, Hans Wilsdorf, sought to offer a watch that embodied reliability, precision, and an understated elegance. Qualities that would come to define TUDOR for generations to come.

In the mid-20th century, the brand found its stride, crafting watches that appealed not only to civilians but also to professionals in demanding environments. With each model, the brand cemented its reputation for robustness and clarity, championing tool watches that were as practical as they were stylish. These early years laid the foundation for what would become a distinctive identity. One grounded in innovation, performance, and a quietly confident aesthetic.

In this article, we delve into the world of TUDOR, the beginnings, and it’s mechanics and the TUDOR of today.

The Man Behind TUDOR: Hans Wilsdorf

hans wilsdorf

Hans Wilsdorf, a German Businessman, was already an established name in the horology world prior to the TUDOR launch. His successful and innovative designs in timepieces meant that he was already in good standing, and well respected when we launched TUDOR.

When the wristwatch market was in full expansion, Wilsdorf recognised and appreciated a product that could be more durable, but with the functional guarantees of Swiss ingenious.

TUDOR: A Tool-Watch for the Practical Man

Though the first watch did not hit the market until the late 1940’s, the earliest discussions of TUDOR can be traced back to 1926, where Hans Wilsdorf registered the brand itself.

Between 1947 and 1952, TUDOR successfully launched their waterproof watches under the TUDOR Oyster name, and then followed suit in 1952 with their TUDOR Oyster Prince range. The TUDOR Oyster Prince is a self-winding watch crafted specially for men who desire high quality. A watch that successfully withstood the most rigorous tests ever, and even waterproof, the TUDOR Oyster Prince was the answer to the practical man's sophisticated timepiece.

Diving into the World of the Submariner

Following the success of the TUDOR Oyster Prince, the horological brand undertook a project to craft and develop a professional diver’s watch. With high expectations for durability, reliability, precision and water-proofness, The Oyster Prince Submariner was born.

The Oyster Prince Submariner, reference 7922, saw depths of 100 metres, but the maximum functional immersion depth, set at 100 metres initially, reached 200 metres with the introduction of reference 7924 in 1958. Though, the most popular and arguably iconic Oyster Prince Submariner is the reference 7928. Sporting a larger 39mm case, and crown guard to protect the crown from impacts or shocks led to it's popularity.

1969 saw the introduction of the 'Snowflake' hand. The name given by collectors to the Submariner models with square-tipped hands and square-hour markers. Today, the Snowflake is an iconic part of TUDOR, and though the shape has changed slightly, the Snowflake has become a symbol of the brand's heritage.

Introducing the Chronograph

The TUDOR chronograph made its debut in 1970 with the introduction of the TUDOR Oysterdate, a manually wound timepiece featuring a 45-minute counter and date display. This bold, functional design laid the foundation for TUDOR’s chronograph heritage.

In 1971, the second generation followed, distinguished by its vibrant dial designs and soon affectionately nicknamed the “Montecarlo.” Marking a significant milestone, 1976 saw the release of TUDOR’s first automatic chronograph, combining robust engineering with enhanced performance, further establishing the brand’s enduring legacy in precision timekeeping.

Today, the Chronograph timepiece is still a strong contender in TUDOR's watch collection with the Black Bay Chrono collection being one of the most popular.

TUDOR and the Military

TUDOR watches share a storied connection with the military, having supplied timepieces to elite naval and military forces since the mid-20th century. Renowned for their durability, precision, and legibility, TUDOR models such as the Submariner were issues to the French Navy and U.S. Navy from 1950-1970.

The strength and precision of the timepieces meant that they were fit for purpose, and offered a sleek look to the military personnel. This heritage of rugged performance and reliability continues to inform the brand’s design ethos today, blending robust functionality with timeless style, a legacy forged in the most demanding conditions.
