Oyster Perpetual Rolex Deepsea

Beauty Meets Function in the Oyster Perpetual Rolex Deepsea

Since its founding in 1905, Rolex has remained a symbol of precision, reliability, and the very finest horological craftsmanship. Each curve, line, and embellishment of a Rolex watch represents the ultimate synthesis of elegance and utility, perfecting both form and function to create truly incomparable timepieces.

This masterful craftsmanship is on full display in the Oyster Perpetual Rolex Deepsea, an exceptional divers’ watch presented here in lustrous 18ct yellow gold. Join Michael Spiers as we take a closer look at this outstanding timepiece, exploring how each element operates to create a watch that excels both above and below the surface.

Into the Deep with the Rolex Deepsea

Conceived as a true deep-sea divers’ watch, the Rolex Deepsea is guaranteed waterproof to a staggering depth of 3,900 metres (12,800 feet), making it the perfect companion for challenging underwater excursions and illustrating the breadth of horological innovation achieved by Rolex. Presented here in 18ct yellow gold, the timepiece sports a handsome Cerachrom bezel insert in blue ceramic, complemented by a blue lacquer dial bearing the name ‘DEEPSEA’ in soft, powdered yellow.

Traversing the Face of the Rolex Deepsea

Great attention was paid to the legibility of the Rolex Deepsea, thus informing its design choices: the dial is deliberately pared-back to avoid confusion underwater, featuring simplified, discrete forms of the hour markers as well as hands which are clearly differentiated in size and shape. The date is displayed in Arabic numerals in a date aperture at 3 o’clock, with a 60-minute counter-clockwise graduation on the bezel to allow divers to monitor time spent beneath the surface.

The commitment to legibility undertaken by Rolex extends further than the design of the hour markers and hands – the dial of the Rolex Deepsea also boasts the Chromalight display, designed to illuminate the watchface even in the most challenging of conditions. The hands and markers are filled or coated with a luminescent material which emits a long-lasting blue glow, remaining visible for up to twice as long as traditional phosphorescent materials.

The use of ceramic as a material for the dial is another considered design choice, augmenting the practicality and reliability of the Rolex Deepsea. Not only is this special ceramic virtually scratchproof, but its colours are of a rare intensity and remain highly resistant to environmental effects; in addition, thanks to a unique chemical composition, the high-tech materials are almost impervious to corrosion.

Encasing the dial, the unidirectional rotatable bezel featured on the Rolex Deepsea is fitted with a 60-minute graduated Cerachrom insert that allows divers to monitor their time underwater – an invaluable addition when every second spent below the surface counts. The bezel has been crafted with tactility in mind, offering an excellent grip and ease of manipulation through its knurled edge.

How the Rolex Deepsea Ensures Security Above and Below Water

The Rolex Deepsea is a watch designed to be pushed to its limits – and so must possess a case and bracelet up to the challenge. The timepiece benefits from the Ringlock system, a patented case architecture comprised of three superposed elements that work together to ensure ultimate security: a thick, slightly domed sapphire crystal, a high-performance compression ring to withstand crushing water pressure, and a case back engineered for maximum strength.

The Oysterlock folding clasp that guards the Rolex Deepsea’s 3-link bracelet prevents accidental opening, while the patented Glidelock extension system – a toothed mechanism tucked beneath the clasp cover – allows fine adjustment of up to 20 mm without tools, an essential addition for divers fastening over wetsuits. The Oyster case of the Rolex Deepsea is also equipped with the patented helium escape valve, protecting the watch even in great depths by allowing excess pressure built up inside the watch case to escape during a diver’s decompression phase.

The Superior Craftsmanship of the Rolex Deepsea

At the heart of the Rolex Deepsea beats the Calibre 3235, a self-winding mechanical movement entirely developed and manufactured by Rolex. First released in 2015 and introduced on the Deepsea in 2018, this exceptional Calibre represents a distillation of Rolex’s watchmaking expertise, delivering outstanding performance in terms of precision, power reserve, and reliability.

Thanks to its barrel architecture and the superior efficiency of its escapement, the movement boasts a power reserve of approximately 70 hours – ensuring the watch continues to keep perfect time even after a weekend off the wrist.

Central to this performance is the patented Chronergy escapement, a marvel of engineering that renders it impervious to strong magnetic fields. The movement is further enhanced by a blue Parachrom hairspring, manufactured by Rolex in a paramagnetic alloy that offers remarkable stability in the face of temperature variations and high resistance to shocks; fitted with a Rolex overcoil, this component ensures the Calibre maintains its regularity in any position.

Like all Rolex watches, the Rolex Deepsea carries the Superlative Chronometer certification, a rigorous standard redefined by the brand in 2015. This distinguished designation confirms that the fully assembled watch has successfully undergone a series of tests conducted by Rolex in its own laboratories, following official certification of the movement by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).

The result is precision of the order of −2/+2 seconds per day – a standard far exceeding that required for official chronometer certification. This commitment to excellence is symbolised by the green seal accompanying every Rolex watch, coupled with an international five-year guarantee.
