Last week, TUDOR expanded the horizons of its Ranger collection, unveiling sleek 36mm models and an all-new, light-catching “Dune” white dial variant. Instantly igniting conversation across social media, this release has been embraced by avid collectors for its understated yet unmistakably iconic aesthetic. Inspired by the Dakar Rally, and as official timekeepers of the race, TUDOR has been driven by the relentless heat of the desert, creating a tool watch that will not miss a second.
To honour this early Christmas present, we delve into the rich heritage of the TUDOR Ranger and explore how these latest references are elevating the line to bold new heights.
A Robust Classic
One thing stands out immediately about the Ranger: its purposeful simplicity. The name “Ranger,” first registered by Hans Wilsdorf in 1929, originally served more as an idea than a specific model; it was an identity meant to evoke the spirit of adventure. Today, this plays off their mantra: Born to Dare.
After registering the name, in the 1950s, TUDOR launched the Oyster Prince, a watch that played a role in the British North Greenland Expedition from 1952 to 1954. These early models embodied the spirit that would eventually define the Ranger line. The true turning point came in the 1960s, when TUDOR introduced the Oyster Prince Ranger, characterised by its bold Arabic numerals at 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock set against a clean black dial, an aesthetic that established the Ranger’s enduring design language. By 2014, the Heritage Ranger refined and reintroduced this familiar look to a new generation.
In 2022, TUDOR once again reimagined the collection, unveiling a contemporary model that merged rugged utility with modern sophistication. Created to honour the 70th anniversary of the British North Greenland Expedition, a defining chapter in the brand’s explorative legacy, the 2022 Ranger delivered a powerful, purpose-built tool watch with a robust case, exceptional legibility, and TUDOR’s advanced T-fit clasp.
This year, TUDOR has shifted its focus from the ice caps of Greenland to the heat of Saudi Arabia, aiming to take on the desolate dunes of the desert.
A New Inspiration
As mentioned earlier, the inspiration behind TUDOR’s new dial and case size draws directly from Saudi Arabia, specifically from the legendary Dakar Rally. Known simply as The Dakar, this off-road endurance epic race pushes competitors across some of the planet’s most unforgiving terrain, demanding they navigate towering dunes, deep mud, camel grass, and jagged rocks.
As the rally’s official timekeeper, TUDOR measures every second of every stage with uncompromising precision. Regarded as one of the most gruelling motorsport challenges in the world, the Dakar forces drivers to conquer vast distances under merciless conditions. With specialised stages that test both speed and stamina, the race is as much a trial of endurance as it is of velocity. And for a challenge of this magnitude, only the most capable tool watch will suffice.
Under the Hood of the Ranger
The new Ranger line proudly carries forward the brand’s legacy, highlighted by the introduction of smaller 36mm models, which have been desired by enthusiasts worldwide, and understated “Dune White” variants. With additional choices of a grained or matte black dial, the hour markers and hands are painted with a Grade A Swiss Super-LumiNova® luminescent material.
Crafted with a fully satin-brushed 316L steel case and fixed bezel, this compact timepiece is engineered to withstand even the harshest conditions, reflecting the challenge of The Dakar. Inside, the COSC-certified TUDOR MT5400 and MT5402 automatic calibres deliver reliable performance and an impressive 70-hour power reserve.
On steel-bracelet models, the TUDOR “T-fit” clasp adds another layer of practicality and comfort. With its blend of rugged capability, refined aesthetics, and functionality, the Ranger continues to stand out as an iconic tool watch.
At Michael Spiers, we think this is a fantastic addition to the collection, giving it a new lease of life whilst also paying homage to TUDOR's rich heritage. The smaller size is also something that watch enthusiasts have been asking for, and it is great to see that clearly they are listening.
