What did Michael Spiers do to give back in 2023?

Posted on 16 April 2024

At Michael Spiers, giving back to the community isn't just a commitment – it's a part of who we are. With over 60 years of history, we've not only built a reputation for fabulous jewellery and watches, but also for our unwavering dedication to supporting local charitable and philanthropic initiatives throughout the West Country and beyond.

Promoting Health and Well-being

We understand the importance of community healthcare services, which is why we stand behind organisations such as St Luke's Hospice and Children's Hospice South West. By partnering with these vital charities, we ensure that individuals and families receive the care and support they need during the most challenging of times.

St Luke’s Hospice in Plymouth is very close to our hearts. The late Michael Spiers spent many weeks being cared for by the exceptional team of specialists both at home and at the hospice itself. We donated sufficient funds to build a ward in his name. Since then, we continue to support numerous fundraisers each year to support the hospice. In 2023 we were proud to fund the development of the Welcome Garden, a tranquil space for relaxation and recooperation. Once again we continue to sponsor the incredibly successful Midnight Walk.

Investing in our Youth

We recognise the transformative power of shaping young lives. That's why we support organisations including Lord's Taverners, DIVE PROJECT Cornwall, and sports teams such as England Squash, Exeter Chiefs, Somerset County Cricket Club and numerous local schools. Through our contributions, we aim to promote physical well-being and instil important values such as teamwork and perseverance in our youth.

The aim of DIVE PROJECT Cornwall is to positively impact the mental health and wellbeing of young people. Not only do students learn about working as a team, developing their confidence and improving their physical health, the project also aims to boost their self-esteem as well as develop valuable life skills.

We are proud to have donated to the esteemed British School of Watchmaking and sponsoring a student scholarship on their watchmaking course.  We will be offering this opportunity to the local students to enable him or her to enter the fascinating and captivating world of horology.

Championing Women's Empowerment

At our core, we believe in uplifting and celebrating women's achievements. That's why we proudly sponsor events including the West Country Women's Awards, recognising and honouring the remarkable contributions of women in various fields. Through our support, we strive to foster an environment of inclusivity and empowerment within our community.

The awards were created in 2022 to celebrate and highlight the achievements and triumphs of women across Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset.  Our very own Group Manager, Jess Lavoine, sits on the voting committee. In 2023, we were the sponsors for the Phoenix Award, which celebrated the incredible achievements of women who have risen from the ashes to great success. The winner, Jan Ford, as chosen by us, has since gone on to become a best-selling author and starred in numerous TV talk shows.

Engaging with the Community

In addition to our direct contributions, we actively participate in charity auctions, donating luxury items and experiences to raise funds for various charitable causes. These auctions not only provide financial support but also raise awareness about important social issues, rallying the community to join us in making a positive impact. We have donated to a number of fantastic and local causes, including Jerimiah's JourneyCancer Research UK, Bliss Little Lights, the Rainbow Ball, AGE UK and many more.

Philanthropy isn't just a side project – it's an integral part of our identity. As we continue to grow and evolve, our commitment to enriching the lives of individuals and local communities remains steadfast. Through our support for women's empowerment, healthcare initiatives, youth development programs, and efforts to protect vulnerable communities, we strive to create a brighter and more compassionate world for all.

Thank you to everyone who has supported us on this journey. Your partnership and generosity inspire us to continue our mission of making a positive impact, one act of kindness at a time.
