How did Michael Spiers make a difference in 2024?

Posted on 3 January 2025

At Michael Spiers, our values are deeply rooted in family, kindness and charity. Giving back to the community is more than just a commitment - it is a fundamental part of who we are. With over 60 years of history, we have built a reputation not only for exquisite jewellery and watches, but also for our unwavering dedication to supporting a wide range of local philanthropic causes across the West Country and beyond.

Community Healthcare Services

We partner with vital community healthcare services including St Luke's HospiceChildren's Hospice South West and Jeremiah's Journey to ensure that individuals and families receive the care and support they need during the most challenging of times.

St Luke's Hospice in Plymouth is very close to our hearts. The late Michael Spiers spent many weeks being cared for by the exceptional team of specialists both at home and at the hospice itself. We donated sufficient funds to build a ward in his name. Since then, we continue to support numerous fundraisers each year to support the hospice. In 2024, we sponsored and participated in the incredibly successful Midnight Walk.

Shaping Young Lives

We proudly support organisations which have the transformative power of shaping young lives, such as Lord's Taverners, DIVE PROJECT Cornwall, NSPCC and sports teams such as England Squash, Cornish Pirates, Plymouth Argyle, Exeter Chiefs, Somerset County Cricket Club and numerous local schools. Through our contributions, we aim to promote physical well-being and instil important values such as teamwork and perseverance in the next generation.
We are delighted to have donated to the esteemed British School of Watchmaking and sponsoring a student scholarship on their watchmaking course. We will be offering this opportunity to local students to enable him or her to enter the fascinating and captivating world of horology.

Celebrating Women's Achievements

At our heart, we strive to foster an environment of inclusivity and female empowerment within our community. That's why we proudly sponsor the West Country Women's Awards, recognising and honouring the remarkable contributions of women in various fields across the South West.

The awards, created in 2022, celebrate and highlight the triumphs of women across Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset. In 2022, 2023 and 2024, we sponsored the Phoenix Award, which celebrates the incredible achievements of women who have risen from the ashes to great success. The 2024 winner, Nicola 'Rosie' Steevenson, as chosen by us, served as a frontline Tornado F3 Jet Navigator and has since gone on to setup On A Mission to inspire and encourage girls and women to push boundaries enabling them to excel and achieve their fullest potential.

Engaging with the Community

Beyond our direct contributions, we actively engage with local charity auctions by donating luxury items and experiences to raise funds for important causes. These auctions not only generate financial support but also shine a spotlight on crucial social issues, inspiring the community to come together and make a difference. We have supported a number of remarkable causes, including Plymouth Business Charity Group, Trevi, Plymouth Ladies Charity ClubParkinsons UK, the Peninsula Medical Foundation and many more.

For us at Michael Spiers, philanthropy isn't only a side project – it is an integral part of our identity. As we continue to grow and evolve, our dedication to improving the lives of individuals and supporting local initiatives remains unwavering. From our support of women's empowerment and healthcare programs to protecting vulnerable communities, we work hard to create a more compassionate and brighter future for everyone.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported us on this journey. Your partnership and generosity inspire us to keep pushing forward on our mission to make a meaningful difference, one act of kindness at a time.
