It is with deep sadness that the Michael Spiers family announces the passing of our beloved Chairman, Keith White MBE, who died on Tuesday. We are heartbroken to lose such an extraordinary man who has meant so much to our company, our community, and his family.
Keith was born and raised in London. In 1964, he married Rita, sister of Michael Spiers, the founder of our company. Two years later, in 1966, they moved to Cornwall to join Michael at his small gift shop in Looe, working alongside Michael Cox and Stephen Spiers.
What began as a seasonal venture soon became something much greater. Through determination and vision, Keith and the team began expanding, acquiring shops across the region. The opening of our Plymouth store marked a turning point, as it became our first year-round business, and from there, everything took off.
After Michael’s passing in 1999, Keith stepped into the role of Managing Director. He was a true visionary, whose boundless positivity, energy, and leadership propelled the company to new heights. His drive to improve and innovate helped shape Michael Spiers into the trusted and admired brand it is today, with four beautiful showrooms in Truro, Plymouth, Exeter, and Taunton.
Outside the business, Keith had a lifelong passion for squash. He represented the UK across all age groups and went on to sponsor the Exeter Diamonds in the Premier Squash League. In 2012, he was awarded an MBE by the then Prince of Wales, now King Charles III, in recognition of his outstanding services to sport.
A proud member of The Jesters Club since 1976, Keith also served as the West of England Representative, tirelessly promoting squash throughout the Westcountry.
Keith was married to Rita for 61 years, they raised two children, Samantha and Damian, and were loving grandparents to Chelsea, Lola, and Saul. Just a year ago, Keith joyfully welcomed his first great-grandchild, Valentina, daughter of Chelsea.
Keith was a true gentleman, always dapper, kind, and generous with a good sense of humour. His legacy will live on in the company he helped build, in the sporting world he championed, and in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He will be deeply missed.
